Whether you're an experienced hiker or a novice, there's a multi-day trek in Bhutan to fit your needs.

About JomolhariTrekking

Jomolhari Trek is longer than the Jomolhari Loop – the most popular trekking routes in Bhutan. With altitude differences of 2,500m and nearly 5,000m it offers a wide range of landscapes, fauna and flora. The highlight of this trek is the spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from Jomolhari Basecamp (Jangothang). This is an exceptional beauty trek in context of Bhutan geography. Jomolhari treks is also beginning from  Paro city. The actual trek starts from a walk past the Drukgyal Dzong at Paro. The trail allows you to walk through the terrace and millet fields alongside the Pachu river and the apple orchards to Gunitsawa and eventually to Shana. Most of the campsites from hereon are nestled in between pine forests. The trek gets even more interesting and challenging as you head to Thangthangkha at 3750m, a sudden altitude change. The main highlights of this day are entirely the views of one of the highest mountains in the world, Jomolhari Mountain (7326m/24,035ft), that first come to sight in this trek. This is one of the biggest attractions of the trek.

We have offered the Chomolhari (Jomolhari) Loop trek for eight days and a comprehensive itinerary for 12 days, including a cultural tour in Bhutan. Chomolhari (Jomolhari) Trek provides a diverse variety of Bhutanese Landscapes. This trek is considered a kind of moderate to demanding trail, and the best times to trek this glorious eight days trek are April to May and Sep to Nov. During this trek, you will be camping for seven nights and the rest of the days at the hotel.

The tour begins with a scenic flight to Paro, the valley town, just west of Thimphu – the capital of Bhutan. As you look down from your window, you will witness the stunning views of Paro Dzong and the surrounding Himalayas. On the way to the monastery, you will be enchanted by the pine forest and the calming sound of the player flag fluttering with the swift wind. You’ll even walk past temples and a sacred pool.

The mesmerizing monastery, seemingly sitting on the edge of a cliff, is perhaps the most famous in Bhutan. It is also known as Paro Taktsang or Taktsang Palphug Monastery. The evening is free to spend as you wish.

Overnight at Hotel.

Starting at Drukgyel (2580m) and camp near Sharna Zampa (2870m). There is a gradual climb following the Paro river through the agriculture valley and villages. After a heavy breakfast, you will follow the trail that leads to the river. Today is one of the days you will experience the Jomolhari trek difficulty as it is one of the longest days of your trek spanning a distance of around 21 km. The trek takes a gradual ascend through a lush forest of blue pine, oak, rhododendron trees, birch, and fir. Eventually, you will begin walking through the rocky and bumpy path and pass wooden bridges.

On this long day, the trail continues with lots of small ups and downs. After going uphill through the river valley the valley finally narrows gradually to a mere path which descends to a meadow where a camp will be set up. From here, if weather permits, you will have the first great view of Mt. Jomolhari.

If you did not see Mt. Jomolhari the previous evening, you will still have a chance to get a great view early this morning. This morning the trek continues up the Paro Chhu valley which widens into patches of alpine meadow and scanty growths of forest. You will cross an army checkpoint along the way and enjoy a spectacular view of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. In this area yaks and their herder’s homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Passing the villages Soe, Takethang and Dangochang is another asset on this day. After reaching Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites of the Himalayas, you will again have a spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari.

On this day, you will stop at Jangothang and take a rest. There are a lot of small activities you can enjoy during this day. For a better view of Jomolhari, you can even trek a little further up. You can also check out the ruins of an old fortress nearby.

Starting at Jangothang (4090m) and camp at Lingshi (4010m) Today you encounter your first major pass at 4890m ( Nyile-la ).You also get snow peak views of Tserim Kang (6789m) Camp near a stream in a meadow.

The trail leads to a last settlement in the valley and drops to the Paro Chhu. Passing the lake of Tshophu (4,380m) you will climb up steeply to Bhonte La pass at 4,890 m, the highest point of this trek route. Reaching the Dhumzo Chhu river, you trek downstream passing the few houses of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo),

 Over there.

Today you will be taking a long trek that takes about 9 hours and covers a distance of 22 km to reach Shodu. The trail starts with a decent climb upwards to a chorten on a ridge into the Mo Chhu valley. You will cross a river and ascend to the Yeli La pass at the altitude of 4,820m/15,813ft. The land is mainly deserted from thereon but offers views of the majestic snowcapped Jomolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tshering Gang, and Masangagng.

The trail climbs up to the Yelila pass at an altitude of 4,930m. From the pass, on a clear day you will get an excellent view of Jumolhari, Tserimgang and Masanggang. The trek from the pass to the campsite at Shodu is a steep downhill.

Today you will come back to the tree line. The path follows the Thimphu River, descending through rhododendron, juniper, and other alpine forests. You will be able to see stunning views of rocky cliffs and waterfalls. You can rest by the riverside and enjoy a hot meal. A final climb for about an hour walk will bring you to Barshong. Camp just below the ruins of a small Dzong.

The trail descends down to the Thimphu Chhu river valley, through dense forests of rhododendron, birch, conifer, maples and bamboos and then ascends to pasture lands. Afterward you will drive to the thimphu from there. Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and one of the modern cities there.
